PKR Youth stages 'fiery' protest outside MACC headquarters

PUTRAJAYA (Feb 25, 2009) : Two days after lodging a police report against the newly-minted Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Youth yesterday staged a "fiery" protest outside the MACC headquarters here today.

The 100 protesters, led by PKR supreme council member Badrul Hisham Shaharin, arrived at the the MACC office shortly after 11am.

Under the watchful eye of scores of policemen deployed there to prevent any untoward incident, the protesters brought out boxes of documents and copies of reports lodged with the MACC since 1990 and started burnt them at the MACC entrance.

They also burnt an enlarged photograph of MACC chief Datuk Seri Ahmad Said Hamdan and the MACC logo.

At this juncture, officials from the Environment Department arrived and threatened action against the protesters for open burning if they continued.

Badrul Hisham then walked into the MACC headquarters to hand over a "death certificate" to an MACC staff.

"This symbolically shows that the MACC must be buried because it has been manipulated and used by Barisan Nasional politicians to 'frame' Opposition leaders," he said.

"We believe the MACC has become a tool for Barisan Nasional," said Badrul.

"Action seems to be taken very swiftly on Pakatan Raykat (PR) leaders while hundreds of complaints against BN and Umno members have never seen the light of day," he said.

He added that the protest served as reminder that MACC should act on all complaints and not be biased in its investigations.

Badrul also expressed disappointment with the manner Ahmad Said disclosed in the press conference in Penang last week that Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim was under probe for the issues involving the "car and cows".

Police reports against the MACC were lodged nationwide by PKR members on the same issues.

About an hour later, the protesters dispersed without any untoward incident.
