PETALING JAYA: Several groups aligned to the Opposition will hold a gathering to protest the involvement of former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in the movement to oust Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
Spokesperson of the gathering Badrul Hisham Shahrin, or popularly known as Chegubard, said the gathering at Kuala Lumpur Chinese Assembly Hall on Saturday night will highlight the grouses of the people against the former prime minister.
He said Dr Mahathir did not represent the people, as he only wanted to fulfil his political interest – which was to remove Najib.
“That is his only intention. Why drag the people when it will only benefit him and people around him?” he said.
He said the people wanted a total change, and not just a change of leadership from Umno.
“It should not be about toppling an individual and replacing him with someone that comes from the same party. We want a total change of the system,” he said.
Badrul recalled the time when Dr Mahathir initiated a similar movement to remove his successor Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
“He (Dr Mahathir) had accused Pak Lah of all sorts of criminal offences. But when he stepped down, did we see Pak Lah being brought to court?” Badrul said.
He said this was the reason behind Saturday’s gathering.
“We will see ordinary citizens taking the stage tomorrow.
“There will be students, taxi drivers, small traders, homemakers and factory workers,” he said.
Last week, suspended Umno deputy president Tan Sri Muhyddin Yassin and former Kedah mentri besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir along with Dr Mahathir and
45 other politicians as well as activists signed a declaration to “Save Malaysia”.
The demands of the declaration included working towards the removal of Najib and all those who supported him.
The move has, however, been criticised by some Pakatan Harapan supporters and politicians, civil society groups and Barisan leaders.
