As a concerned individual, I would like to add my concern on the inappropriate use of force by the Malaysian policemen in the recent shooting of a peaceful rally of BERISH and resulted in the shooting of its supporters and injuries of a number of their members.
The state has a duty to always ensure the protection of its citizens even at public demonstrations. The freedom to peaceful assembly and freedom of speech are universal rights and the state is duty bound to uphold these rights at all times.
It is unfortunate that in a clamor to demand for a free and fair election; one of the most essential elements of democracy, water cannon, tear gas and live bullets were used to disperse the crowd. Malaysia is a democratic country; the government should constitute an independent committee to investigate the matter, make its report public and let justice prevail. This is the only way that it can show to its people that no one is above the law.
I also encourage the government to allow the Malaysian people to carry out their democratic rights and live up to its obligation to promote and protect their citizens at all times.
Sincerely yours,
